A: Category 3 ABP includes:
• Products of animal origin stored for a long time in warehouses;
• Products of animal origin with expired ′use by′ dates;
• Products of animal origin which are no longer intended for human consumption for commercial reasons;
• Residues from the processing of animal products.
Q: Where can I find more information about category 3 ABP?
A: The activities defining the health rules on animal by-products and derived products in the EU are laid down in Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009.
Q: Do all categories of ABP have to be disposed of?
A: No, many animal products unfit for human consumption find application in cosmetics, pet food, animal feed, etc.
Q: How are category 3 ABP disposed of?
A: There are different technologies:
- by incineration in an incinerator/ rendering plant
- by processing into pet food or as additives in feed for farm animals and fish
- extraction of various enzymes and elements for the leather and cosmetics industries
